The challenges of global sourcing as a new practice in Boeing are clear. As Steve Creedy says: "At the centre of the disappointing delay is the company's innovative global supply chain." Perhaps because of this central importance, Boeing has decided to combine several groups under a new Supply Chain Management organisation as mentioned in The Composite World's article of 12/8/2008 where it reads: "Several groups ... are now part of a new organization called Supply Chain Management and Operations..."
The case of Boeing 787's two years delay proves that long term benefits of global sourcing can justify lost sale and damaged image, at least in passenger aircraft industry who enjoys a bi-polar competition between Boeing and Airbus! How would Boeing have adapted this strategy if had say ten competitors instead of only one? Any ideas?
